    Hey Louis!

Thanks so much for posting all of this, and motivating me even more to get a large, expensive book/anthology of Leyendecker’s work. Despite the derogatory portrayal of African Americans in his work (whenever they did show up), his style and grasp of composition are well-worth studying further.

I do not think these “studies” on American Art Archives are by leyendecker. They are wrong for a hundred different reasons. On dark backgrounds, poorly drawn, they are without Leyendecker’s virtuosity, he never worked with white outlines, he never painted studies in black and white that I know of, there’s no grid lines for transfer to canvas, the master studies are terrible (and there’s no other evidence he ever did such a thing as master copies during his career), he never crowded studies unto the same canvas (because he was wealthy and profligate for most of his working life so he certainly wouldn’t worry about saving money on canvas)…

All you have to do is compare these “studies” to one that are verifiably by Leyendecker and you’ll see the vast difference…. they just aren’t by him.

If I see illustraiton house, the goffman’s or martignette verify that they are by him…. only then will I *think* about believing they are real..

    Best,
    kev

Love JCL thanks for posting the other entries, these however appear fake to me.

thanks everyone for chiming in about good ol’ JCL, the show itself was amazing.

William and Kev I don’t consider myself a JCL expert but these were in the show labeled to be by JCL and thats all I have to back up the authenticity.

Could you two post some examples of whats changed, I would really like to see the difference. I’m not sure what constitutes a fake JCL but I want to learn.
