With the next story I was more abitious, I wanted to tell a story that had a bigger arc, and to get more into character and cosequence. I ruffly planed it to be about 21 pgs ( it ended up being 27 pgs.) in full color and I wanted to find a way to clean up the ruff layouts with no pencil stlye clean up line. After playing around a bit in photoshop I arrived at what you see below..

The schedule I set for myself this time was about a month and 1/2, 2 months tops, Right.. I think I worked everyday after work for 4 months straight, I started at 10pm and ended between 3-6 in the am, weekends I worked 8-10 hours each day. The Learning curve on this story was much more intense I really thought at one point that I wasn’t going to finish. The process of finishing this story was new, I did have a theoratical production pipeline with photoshop, which was this: ruff out layouts on paper and scan them, clean up in b&w (in photoshop) and then color using hue saturation layers in photoshop. That meant I had to keep characters on a different layer from th bg so I could copy over character colors to other pages, copy over the bg color base to other pages. It Seemed economical and that was the only part of my initial plan that worked more or less like I thought, everhing else took more time than I thought. All I wanted was to finish in time to go to print with the hope that I maintained the essence of the story that sparked it all, I did it and it will be in Afterworks 2.

So this is the first 2 pages of my first short story in the anthology Afterworks 1, my goal was to try and tell a gag in 8 pgs and giving myself a couple of weeks to layout and finish the pages in time to go to print, easy enough right? Well it took me a month to finish, I even took a week off of work to finish it. (just a bit off my intended schedule of 2 weeks) In the end, I finished it in time and was relatively happy with the end result, this is a learning process after all and I learned 1. that I liked the the medium and 2. it was a lot of work.

this is the promotional poster I made for the alternative press expo in 05, when I shared a table with my boy Sanjay Patel.

The last 4 months have been a bit rough, I have been burning the candle at both ends trying to finish my 26 page story for Afterworks 2 anthology. Now there are things I like and dislike but I tried hard to make it entertaining and in the end, I did the best I could and finished the story. Here are the main characters.
This is Miles, a thirteen year old kid who lives with his mom and is a product of divorce.
The other kid is Phil, Miles’ only friend..(fyi, some of these early sketches where he was about age 9 or 10, the attitude is correct.)

This is Alice, mom to Miles by day and CNA (certified nursing assistant) by night. Her life revolves around making Miles happy.

This man here is Rex Mundy III, father to Miles and ex-husband to Alice. He is the current North American Manager of Infernus Inc. (aka Hell)

Now to meet Rex’s boss, his name is CEO Death, nuff said.

One last guy who is a bit player in the story, Bill. Bill works at Infernus Inc. and has a run in with Miles. He was one of the fun characters to draw.

Next I’ll post the first 2 pages from ruff layouts to finished color.

As of late I havn’t had the time to post due the story I contributed in the Afterworks 2 anthology, my story runs 27 pages full color and in the next couple of days I will start to post some designs and such. For now I also keep drawing small side projects for friends here around work, I’ll start with a couple of birds from recent. The first is a baby shower invite and the second is for a childs t shirt, both are all digital. ( this seems to be baby season here at work.)

I was asked to draw a birthday card up for a friend of mine at work. This guy has been in the movie industry for a while and has designed, storyboarded, and he paints some great matte paintings on movies like the Incredibles. Paul is his name and ladies he’s available.
lo.
