This week I produced two witches, the reason is I couldn’t decide which one not to draw. They both appealed to me in different ways, when I started doing my research. I start by reading about witches and then looking at different women trying to find faces that fit my idea of a witch. (I can think of a couple of x-girlfriends that fit.)

This first drawing I found a face that looked like a witch that looks more like a modern ideal of a witch, black robe, pointy hat, etc. Basically a witch with all the typical symbols that we know describes a witch. I had hoped to not use those symbols so i decided to work on another..

Now this witch was going to be a more Shaman like, earthy, old world. She had to look like she could be the spiritual leader of a tribe, that was my thinking when I was sketching this one.
lo.

If I had a Spoiled Brat for a Son I think he would be like this, a devious little punk that just might be the spawn from Hell. Having said that, this is
my brat that I turned in and this drawing was a straight shot. I was lucky in the way that I just put the pencil to paper and it just felt right. I made a few adjustments to the initial sketch to pull a few things out and not make him overly mean in his decor, rather I wanted the attitude to state who he is.

This guy was a bit tough to arrive at, I went through about 15-20 miner types and although those were reference accurate they lacked any substance. Being frustrated I decided to draw a horse and like that the Miner Rider came along too. Sometime I need to burn the pencil like that to get something I like, This guy makes me want to get a western story going. I guess all in good time.

There are a couple of guys here at work (Robert Kondo and Danny Arriaga) that started this ritual of sorts, a weekly character design. They give themselves a theme for example, a substitute teacher or a zombie musician. This is my first week so I went a little far and painted it in watere color and ink, I’m just looking for excuses to not paint in the computer.

So, here’s the story. I’ve been using blogger and decided to make the move to wordpress, I heard some good things about it. So I did my reasearch and made the move. I decided to start the new improved blog with this artist right here, Steve Huston. In the years between 1996-99 I ,like alot of others in the LA area, had the opportunity to study with him in animation studios(where he taught life drawing) and his Eagle Rock Studio (where he taught drawing, painting and gave an opinion or 2 on art). Seeing the studies and works in progress were an inspiration. Last I heard he moved to Montana ,I think, to live on a ranch and paint.
